"In Italy narrative representation simultaneously played a crucial role in the newly developing realm of pictorial naturalism and acted as a fundamental feature of Christian imagery. Hans Belting, in outlining a significant shift in this mode of art at the time of Giotto, highlights the essential parallels between narrative structure and the Christian faith: "Revelation is told as a biography of Christ ... The truth became visible through the narration of miraculous and significant events, res gestae, in the sense of true and important facts."
